Brush + Ink
Brush + Ink is a gallery display identity at the Whitney Museum, showcasing a collection of Modern Japanese Art and Design. I created the identity by looking at common themes throughout Japanese Design. I looked at colors, iconography, and wanted to create something feeling fresh, contemporary, and modern.
I went through lots of ideation (mood board, icon, type, and color treatment ideation shown below) until I landed on a color scheme I thought most suitable, as well as a playful icon that could be used to create other images, patterns, and unique compositions.
The main icon I created is meant to represent a crane-like bird flying, as well as mimick Japanese architecture. The use of abstract shapes and patterns in Modern Japanese Design caught my eye, so I wanted to pay tribute and took inspiration from that.
